Training of Teacher and Student Technology Champions
Rwanda Education Board (REB) is organizing a training in ICT in Education for teachers and students who are in university or who have completed university studies from 3rd December to 18th December 2012 in 19 districts of the country: Kicukiro, Gasabo, , Nyarugenge, Kamonyi, Ruhango, Nyanza, Huye, Nyaruguru, Nyamasheke, Rutsiro, Ngororero, Nyabihu, Musanze, Gakenke, Rulindo, Kayonza, Gatsibo, Kirehe, and Bugesera. REB has already completed the training of 1287 Teacher and Student Technology Champions in the other districts and that was from February to June 2012.
ICTs can be leveraged as effective educational tools, which implies that the training of teachers will improve the quality of education. However, studies demonstrate that access to ICT with adequate related training does not necessary prompt teachers and or students to use technology to improve their learning activities. More experienced student- teachers can assist their colleagues [and even their teachers] in the zone of proximal development and, therefore, enhance the integration of new technology in teacher education (ref: NICIII, Mukama (2009)). This explains partly the reason why this project focuses on both Teacher and Student Technology Champions (TSTCs). These are considered to be active ICT users located in different districts around the country and who would assist teachers in infusing technologies in education.
The objectives of this training are:
95 trainers, who have been selected among the 1287 trained Teacher and Student Technology Champions, had a 2-day refresh course at ES Kanombe/EFOTEC Kanombe today 28th November 2012 up to 29th November 2012. This course’s objective is to impart trainers with more pedagogical skills.
From this Monday 3rd December 2012, a number of 2280 Teacher and Student Technology Champions started the training on ICT in Education in the above said 19 districts. Teacher and Student Technology Champions will be able to use selected applications and educational technology tools to support specific learning outcomes and provide learning opportunities to their students/colleagues/teachers.
