Rwanda celebrated the Day of the African Child at Isibo level

On June 16th 2021, Rwanda joined other African countries to celebrate the yearly Day of the African Child (DAC) under the theme “Isibo, a pivot to child development.”

In her message at the celebration of this day, the first lady of Rwanda Jeannette Kagame said “this year, as Rwanda focuses on the role of the community in promoting Early Childhood Development, we are calling on parents, partners, employers and everyone to continue supporting these efforts geared towards ensuring every child’s access to quality education, care, health and protection.”

In the line with the theme of the year, the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion (MIGEPROF), Prof. Jeannette Bayisenge said “as we celebrate this day, we need to remind ourselves that the role of everyone in ensuring children’s development is paramount. Let us continue to have open conversation on the root causes of malnutrition and seek long-lasting solutions within our communities-Isibo. We should also partake in all interventions that contribute to the child growth including integrated ECD services. Together, let us eradicate malnutrition and stunting among our children because they are the next generation.”

As child development is multisector, MIGEPROF worked with other social cluster ministries with involvement of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Education as well as various partners including civil society members and Faith Based Organizations. The day also served as an opportunity to launch the ECD day, that will be celebrated every quarter, and conduct all related activities including collecting information on real root causes of malnutrition especially for stunting in each and every ISIBO.

The DAC campaign which was launched on June 16th, 2021 was held in all districts at Isibo level with identified activities that contribute to ensure a healthy growth of the children such as the growth monitoring and screening of all under 5 children including measurement of height for age and weight for age, arm circumference, deworming and distribution of Vitamin.

For this year’s DAC celebration, the theme selected by the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) is: “30 years after the adoption of the Charter: accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2040 for an Africa fit for children.”
